bcp004 - objeckt4 - shades of night
released: october 25th, 2007

objekt4 was formed in 2003 by sweden's anders peterson with the aim of expanding cinematic sound design into music, by creating hybrids with field recordings and musical instruments/approaches. the objective was to create musical ambiance rather than ambient music.

shades of night is objekt4's 6th full length release. objekt4 expands on his early albums with a hybrid approach between various nocturnal ambience, brilliantly combining unique sounds into something that transcends the individual noise. field recordings of the night blend with musical instruments, analogue feedback, and distant voices. the world of objekt4 combines the crackling of a small distant fire in light rain with the singing of night birds, a far off lighthouse foghorn intertwines with the chaos of an insect swarm. electric guitar, gongs, plate bells, crotales, and a 12-string acoustic guitar all seep out of the darkness to add their contribution. that objekt4 can amass these separate sources and construct them into a perfectly blended atmospheric piece is where the beauty and mystery of shades of night comes out of the void and reveals itself in all its glory.

4 separate and unique labels have joined together to deliver this release: australia's basilisk productions, canada's bugs crawling out of people, usa's regimental records and japan's sabbathid records.

Active as Objekt4 since 2003, Anders Peterson has been, if nothing else, highly prolific as is attested by a somewhat extensive discography. One of the latest chapters in the history of this Swedish sound artist is the full-length release "Shades Of Night", co-released between no less than four different labels/organizations. A new chapter but not necessarily a departure from previous Objekt4 offerings, "Shades Of Night" is a collection of moody soundscapes which can be roughly described as being somewhere between pure ambient music and a soundtrack. Subtle and focus-inducing, Objekt4's deeply immersive compositions seem to drag the willing listener into a cold fog-filled desolation, pierced by eerie sounds of faraway strange activity, evocative of feelings of resignation and a vague sense of dread but, simultaneously, of final peace. Though lacking any sort of rhythmical structure or melody but skilfully composed using essentially processed field recordings and the odd instrumental element (a guitar chord here, a bell there), "Shades Of Night" comes across as the dark side of a meditation tape or, perhaps, even as an aural opiate.

A couple of minor flaws with this release though... Firstly, tracks 1 and 3 ("Dawn (Intro)" and "A Fire On The Other Side") don't seem to flow as well as they could between the rest. Secondly, being somewhat addictive after a couple of attentive listens, clocking at 56 minutes, it doesn't seem to last long enough and the ending could perhaps be even less abrupt.

Despite needing the listener's attention, "Shades Of Night" is not by any means hard to get into. Appreciators of cold atmospheric electronics will be right at home with this release as will be anyone with an active imagination who will just sit back, relax and let himself be carried away by the ambiances contained within.

A new release by this known Ambient-artist, which at least got released under the collaboration of the 4 different labels Sabbathid Records, Basilisk Productions, Regimental Records and Bugs Crawling Out Of People. Since Bugs Crawling did mail out this promotional item I therefore like to refer on their contact to purchase this item – which is a strange one for the normally-diving-into-the-harsh-Powernoise-genre related Bugs Crawling-label. OBJEKT 4 creates musically ambience with cinematic and static layer sounds, several field recording elements and sounds of the daily life. 5 tracks are on here, which at least come on more than 53 minutes playing time, this documents the length of each track. “Spirits Of Soil And Sea” is available in two different versions. You’ll get the fog horns of a far away based ship, while the birds, winds and the usual sound of a natural field recording creates an own melody. Well, this is stuff for people who like to sink in and who are able to switch off all stress and hectic which comes in all days. Quite to Experimental-minded, I’ll miss some toughness and a break out of the endless repetitions
